I’m currently learning Japanese Sign Language (JSL), and this time I tried shadowing at an event!
Shadowing is a language-learning method where you practice repeating the same words as a model, slightly delayed, like a shadow. It’s a standard method for learning English and Japanese, and it’s apparently effective for sign languages as well.
This time, I tried shadowing in JSL!
The instructor had recorded a couple of model videos, and I tried shadowing along with them. As a beginner in JSL, it was very difficult.
One difficult aspect, as with learning English and Japanese, is the lack of vocabulary. Another unique challenge of sign language is that you have to face the model videos and imitate their hand movements, so I ended up moving my hands in reverse many times.
However, it made me feel as if I were talking to a JSL user, and by imitating the hand movements even without understanding them, I feel like I’ve become a little more familiar with JSL vocabulary.
Thank you for letting me take part!
